Eternals Disney Plus Release Date Officially Set For Mid-January
Eternals, the most recent origin story film from Marvel Studios, is officially set for its Disney Plus release in January of 2022.
After a previously unconfirmed report on the matter, Marvel Studios has officially announced that Eternals , the most recent MCU film to introduce a new band of heroes, will arrive on Disney Plus in mid-January.
The Celestial-inspired film premiered in theaters on November 5 and has been subjected to mixed reviews amongst critics. Despite its diverse reception, Eternals managed to win the hearts of many due to its cast and the innovative storytelling accomplished by its director, ChloƩ Zhao.
On social media, Marvel shared that Eternals would be available for streaming on Disney Plus on January 12, 2022. The film will be available in IMAX Enhanced on the streaming platform, joining 13 other Marvel films that are currently equipped with the same feature. Eternals will be the third theatrical release from Marvel Studios to appear on Disney Plus this year, joining box office successes Black Widow and Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings.
Eternals relays the unique story of 10 Celestials that arrive on Earth with a distinct mission: to protect Earth from the Deviants. Their distinctive assignment leads to issues amongst the group, which is a large focus of the film. The nearly 3-hour long film explores the bonds these 10 Eternals have developed with one another over thousands of years. This form of intimacy and exploration of relationships is a known trademark in any Zhao film. Eternals stars Salma Hayek, Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Lauren Ridloff, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, The Batman star Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Lia McHugh, and Angelina Jolie as the immortal group, along with Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman.
After the mixed reception Eternals received from critics, some were swayed against seeing the film in theaters, and instead opted to wait for Eternals to become available on Disney Plus. Due to some of its content, Eternals was banned in many countries and received harsher criticism from some of its viewers. Despite that, Eternals' post-credits scenes became a major selling point for some, driving them to the theaters. The two scenes include crucial information and a few teases for upcoming Marvel projects, including the arrival of Harry Styles as Eros. Fortunately, those who have opted to wait for the streaming release of Eternals won't have to do so for much longer.
Since its release, the significance of Eternals within the main MCU storyline has been called into question. With previous statements suggesting that Eternals would not have any sequels, the longstanding future of the group within the MCU is up for debate. However, Eternals did manage to begin to set up Dane Whitman's future and left the fate of a few of the new Marvel stars up in the air. The film ended with the promise that the heroes would return, meaning their stories are far from over.
Eternals is now in theaters and will begin streaming on Disney Plus on January 12, 2022.
